STRATEGIST VS. TACTICIAN

Why You Need Both to Win at Social Media Marketing

When it comes to social media and digital marketing, there are two kinds of professionals: those who understand the big picture, and those who know how to bring that picture to life. You can’t have one without the other—at least not if you want your campaigns to actually work.

The Strategist: Master of the “What”

Strategists are the ones who “get it.” They understand how different platforms, tools, and digital touchpoints fit together to achieve real business goals—whether that’s generating leads, increasing sales, or building a brand.

Armed with years of marketing experience, strategists have a knack for knowing what customers want, when they want it, and how to reach them. They’re great at crafting key messages, identifying the right channels, and designing holistic campaigns that drive results.

But here’s the catch: just because they know what needs to be done doesn’t mean they can execute it themselves. That’s where the tactician steps in.

The Tactician: Master of the “How”

The tactician is the doer. They know how to take a message and make it land—with impact.

They understand the nuances of every platform: what size image to post, which time of day yields the most engagement, how to optimize hashtags, and how to make content go viral without breaking the bank.

Tacticians are technical, agile, and endlessly curious. They spend hours exploring new tools, learning platform updates, and engaging with audiences in real time. They’re the ones who take theory and turn it into traction.

Why You Need Both

Now imagine hiring just one.

With only a strategist, you get great ideas that never see the light of day. With only a tactician, you end up spinning your wheels—posting content that gets likes, but doesn’t ladder up to real results.

Real marketing success lies at the intersection of planning and execution. You need strategy to give your campaigns direction and purpose. And you need execution to bring that strategy to life, measure its performance, and refine it for impact.

Team Structure: Finding the Right Balance

Depending on the scale of your marketing efforts, your team may look different. A small agency managing 4–6 accounts, for instance, can get by with one seasoned strategist and two to three tacticians.

But if your campaigns involve original long-form content, videos, or motion graphics, you’ll also need copywriters, designers, and video editors in the mix. Because no matter how brilliant your message is, if the creative doesn’t deliver, you’ve lost before you even began.

So, Which One Are You?

Are you a big-picture thinker or a hands-on executor? Or maybe a hybrid of both?
